Trees Felled On Farrar Lane page to be retained as historical? |
|
A total of 9 Poplar trees have been felled on land taken from our community by the Ralph Thoresby PfI Company. The Trees were some of the biggest in the area and contained a lot of wild life, birds nests and squirrels. They also produced a lot of seeds that nourished wild life, but were unsightly on the new all weather sports pitches. The official reason that the work was done is that the trees were dangerous. Other trees that are not poplars have blown down on the site recently, so why pick on poplars? The trees have been subject to a tree preservation order since 1970 and appeared to be healthy, and have withstood the high winds of tinshill for many years. The council gave permission for the work to be done because they thought the trees would be prone to snapping in high winds. Have they not heard of pruning? In addition to the Tree Preservation order. The trees are protected by planning agreements in connection with the school. The council have stipulated that the poplars should be replaced within 12 months. 30 trees at least 1.7 metres tall are to be planted. They have to be oak, horse chestnut, maple, beech lime, or ash. Will they really plant conker trees? We will have to make sure that this condition is complied with. The loss of trees means that the rest have to withstand more wind. The school facilities manager told us “I understand your concerns for the squirrels and wildlife within these grounds, however this is a school and its priority must be for the development and safety of children and not squirrels”
